The Corporate Identification Number is the 21-character identifier the ROC assigns to every company at incorporation. It encodes the listing status, the industry code, the state of registration, the year of incorporation, the class of company and the registration number.
It appears on the certificate of incorporation and must be printed on the company’s letterheads, invoices and notices. The MCA portal’s company search also shows it. This page decodes any CIN you already have.
L is a listed company and U an unlisted one. The two letters after the industry code are the state of the registered office, and the three letters near the end are the class, such as PTC for a private company or PLC for a public one.
